No Woman ever steps in the same river twice. For it’s not the same river and she’s not the same Woman

54x54, Oil on Canvas, 2021

Using copyright free images, I made a collage that I translated onto canvas as a structure for my scene. I then painted and repainted until the resulting image felt correct. The female subject is unlike any one of the source images from which she was drawn. The collaged moments offer a surreal account of ironies encountered living in a new place, California. An inserted ‘screen’ shows “Huffless, Puffless Dragon(s)”(1964), an anti-smoking campaign. Clouds fill the sky with traffic. The title, from the words of ancient philosopher Heraclitus, reminds us that every moment, like the overturning water of a river, is fleeting and changing.
